Costa Rica is a country of Central America. It limits to the north with Nicaragua, to the southeast with Panama, its territory is bathed to the east by the Caribbean sea and to the west by the Peaceful ocean. Its capital, economic and political center is San José. The official language is Spanish. Costa Rica, one of the most consolidated democracies of America, has maintained a good political stability, in spite of the social and economic difficulties of the last two decades. Costa Rica won world recognition upon having been the first country in revoking the army the 1º of December of 1948. Its index of human development, one of the better in Latin America, places it in quarter position behind Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. Costa Rica occupies the fifth place on a worldwide basis according to the classification of the index of environmental performance of 2008. Among the countries of Latin America, Costa Rica occupies the first place in the classification of the index of tourist competitiveness, and the place 44 on a worldwide basis.
